The LightSheer laser has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for permanent hair removal. The beam of laser light targets the pigment contained within the hair follicle below the skin surface. The laser energy is selectively absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and hair shaft which severely damages the growth center of the hair. The end result is destruction of the hair or restriction of regrowth. The hair follicles in the active growth phase absorb the most amount of laser energy due to the high concentration of pigment.

The laser is effective at removing unwanted hair from the face, neck, underarms, bikini area, chest, breasts, back, legs and other areas. Optimum removal of all or most hair in a given region requires an average of 3 to 5 sessions which are separated by 4 to 6 week intervals.

How does laser hair removal work?

The laser beam passes through the skin and is absorbed in the hair follicle underneath the skin’s surface. The laser energy is absorbed by and therefore destroys the hair follicle. This unique process affects the hair follicles, disabling the hair’s capacity to grow.

How long will the laser hair removal procedure take?

Each laser pulse treats about a half-inch area, which can contain up to 10 or more hair follicles. The amount of time needed depends on the size of area treated. Treatments on the back or legs can take up to one hour, while treatments of the underarms and bikini generally take 20 minutes.

Are there any side effects?

The treated area may become slightly pink or red afterwards. This will go away within a few minutes to a few hours and in some cases a few days.

Is the laser treatment painful?

There is generally mild discomfort, however it is well tolerated. Some patients describe the treatment as a sensation like the snap of a rubber band – a lot less painful than plucking or waxing.

Are the results of laser hair removal permanent?

Everyone will need at least 4 to 7 treatments for effective permanent hair reduction.

Who is a candidate for laser hair removal?

What areas can be done?

Almost any area of the body can be treated, except below the eyebrow. We can treat between and above, but not below the brows, as it is too close to the eye to use the laser.
