BEFORE COSMETIC SURGERY

THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOUR SURGERY:

  • Read and adhere to the enclosed list of medications and foods to avoid prior to your surgery
  • Arrange for a responsible party to accompany you to your appointment, drive you home, and remain with you for 24 hours.
  • If you have any systemic medical illness such as Heart Disease, Diabetes, Chronic Lung Disease you MUST get medical clearance with written verification from your personal physician.
  • To minimize bruising, start Arnica Montana (a Homeopathic Herb) (Arnica may contain lactose and sucrose) 3 days prior to surgery and continue for one week. Arnica gel should also be used following your procedure on any visible bruises.
  • Take Vitamin C (1000 mg three times a day) and B Complex beginning 2 weeks prior to surgery. Avoid Vitamin E prior to surgery
  • We encourage the continued use of Vitamin C topical serum and Botox or Dysport injections minimize muscle movement during healing thereby enhancing and maintaining your surgical results.
  • Care of your skin before any procedure is important, especially if undergoing a chemical peel or laser procedure. Prior to any chemical peel or laser procedure, apply a medical grade sunblock and hydroquinone (Obaji Clear) for a minimum of 4 weeks before, and Retin-A for a minimum of 2 weeks before. Discontinue these two days before the procedure.
  • Inform the doctor or nurse if you are feeling ill, developing a cold, persistant temperature, chest congestion, nasal stuffiness or skin irritation.
  • Please notify the doctor or nurse if you tend to bruise easily.
  • IF YOU SMOKE, REFRAIN FROM CIGARETTES AT LEAST TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO AND UNTIL COMPLETELY HEALED, OR AT LEAST THREE WEEKS AFTER SURGERY. THE HEALTH OF YOUR SKIN AND THE ABILITY OF YOUR WOUNDS TO HEAL IS GREATLY IMPAIRED BY THE EFFECTS OF CIGARETTE SMOKING.
  • Please refrain from alcoholic beverages for two weeks prior to surgery.
    • Please protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen and/or a hat both before and after your surgery.

BEGIN TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO PROCEDURE:

  • Discontinue aspirin or any drugs containing aspirin, including arthritis, pain or anti-inflammatory medications for two (2) weeks prior to surgery and two (2) weeks after surgery. These drugs may cause increased bruising and bleeding at the time of surgery due to their effect on clotting. Use Tylenol or Anacin III instead. Also avoid Herbal Medications, especially Vitamin E.
  • Eat a balanced diet and do not attempt to lose weight in the two (2) weeks prior to surgery. Proper nutrition is important for healing. Taking multivitamins twice daily will also promote your general health.
  • For patients undergoing facelift procedures: No smoking two (2) weeks prior to surgery and three (3) weeks following surgery. If you have any questions, please ask Dr. Tye. We also recommend that smokers take 2 gm. of vitamin C per day for two (2) weeks before and two (2) weeks after surgery.
  • Fill your prescriptions. Please have them filled within 7 days of prior to your surgery. YOU SHOULD BRING YOUR FILLED PRESCRIPTIONS WITH YOU TO SURGERY.
  • Notify the doctor if a cold or infection develops in the weeks prior to surgery.
  • For patients undergoing a facelift or browlift procedure, hair cannot be tinted or colored for three (3) weeks after surgery. Therefore, you may want to have this done several days before surgery if necessary.
  • For patients undergoing an Endoscopic Brow-Midface lift, Chin Implant or Cheek Implants, begin rinsing with prescription mouth rinse 2 days prior to surgery and rinse the morning of surgery and continue 4 days after your surgery.

THE DAY BEFORE SURGERY:

  • No foods or liquids after midnight the evening before your surgery. This includes water. You may have just enough water to swallow any prescription medications approved by Dr. Tye.

THE MORNING OF SURGERY:

  • Unless otherwise instructed, routine medications are to be taken the morning of surgery with sips of water along with any medications prescribed by Dr. Tye.
  • You may brush your teeth and rinse with prescription mouth rinse if recommended.
  • Wash your hair, face and neck and behind ears with Phisohex prescription anti-bacterial wash thoroughly for 2 days prior to surgery and the morning of surgery.. Reduction of skin bacteria will decrease the risk of infection. Please do not wear moisturizers, creams, lotions, or makeup.
  • WEAR LOOSE FITTING CLOTHES THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PULL OVER YOUR HEAD. Pull-on sweatpants and open-front shirts are recommended. PLEASE WEAR SLIDE-ON SHOES AND WARM SOCKS. Please do not wear laced shoes or zippered pants.
  • Remove all jewelry, hairpins, contact lenses, etc.. If you have long hair, please put it up in a pony-tail.
  • Do not wear any makeup to the office, including eye makeup.
  • Prescriptions will be given to you at your pre-op appointment. YOU SHOULD BRING YOUR FILLED PRESCRIPTIONS WITH YOU TO SURGERY.
